Oving Parish Map now available
The parish Map was launched on Friday 17 August 2007...
A packed village hall enjoyed an evening of nostalgia when the Parish Map was presented to the village after two years' work by a dedicated committee. Roger Baynham welcomed the audience, and
outlined the programme. Kim Leslie from WSCC Records Office explained the concept of these special maps, made by ordinary people for ordinary people to celebrate our everyday lives. Sue Millard who has led the team from the beginning thanked her fellow workers, especially Sue England who had put the artwork together to produce the map.
She announced that it was hoped to write a booklet to go with the map, and so anyone interested in helping with the project would be very welcome.
Then Mrs Lilian Machon who was born at 1, High Street, and lived in Oving for many years, threw back the cover over the map and it was revealed in its glory. She had been the first person to support the idea with photos and reminiscences, but many others had delved into their archives to find
wonderful pictures of life over the decades. At the interval there was time to look at all the photos on display, the loose-leaf albums, and buy a copy of the map for the incredibly cheap price of £2.00!
After the wine and refreshments (very nice) Sue and Di Pitts showed fascinating slides depicting all
aspects of Parish life, both old and more recent. But what made this even more appealing were the commentaries and explanations from men and women in the hall. So among others, Roger Pitts, Percy Belcher and Alf Keats described farming before WW2 when Drewitts Farm worked fifteen horses, and
the number of farm hands ran into double figures. Alf also came out with some jolly tales of the old Nelson Arms where villagers met for music and good company. Mrs Machon remembered her friends and neighbours as their pictures came on to the screen; the Rev Don Johnson amused us with descriptions of village worthies from 50 years ago and Adrian Sampson explained how his father started the mushroom farm. Contributions came from several others, but I was asked for a short article)! As an Oving-ite of only 20 years I was captivated by it all, and congratulate everyone involved, from
beginning to end. I felt proud to be living here, even though controversy still rages - Is it Oo-ving or Oh-ving ?- but that does not matter when we can come together in such a friendly way.

Oving History Group
The Parish Map project was a great success and a considerable amount of information about the Parish was gathered. It was decided that a booklet about the History of the Parish would be a useful addition to the Map.
Thus a new group has been formed called the Oving History group and they are busy gathering more information by interviewing as many people as possible about their memories of the Parish. If you would like to share your memories or carry out some research with the group please contact us.
Some mystery topics have been raised such as ‘ Was there a rail link from Drayton to the airfield before 1928??’
‘Is Queen Victoria’s surgeon buried somewhere in the Parish??’
Members of the group are Bery Lang, Janet Johnston, Di Pitts, Roy Tryhorn, Sue England, Roger and Sandra Baynham, Sue Millard.
