Mrs
Machon now living in Bognor remembers her grandparents living in
the white cottage between Colworth and Oving, previously called Rose
Cottage. She took the trouble to come and see webmaster and talk about
her memories and returned with a photo of her Grandparents taken
outside the cottage.
Her
Grandparents Mr & Mrs Chiverton (Sam and Esther) moved to Oving form
Headley in Hampshire, with 2 children and lived in a house next
to what is now Kettle Barn (High Kettle Corner). They had another 11
children whilst here, the 7th of which was Mrs Machon’s
mother, Polly, who married Mr Joseph Hayter. All her brothers and
sisters attended the village school.
Mrs
Machon's Grannie and Grandad moved to what was then Rose Cottage (not painted
white, but ordinary bricks and mortar, when some of the children had
left home. Mr Chiverton bought it from a Mr Amos of Chichester for 100 guineas.
The cottage was later occupied by one of Mr & Mrs Chiverton's
daughters, Aunty Kit. Mrs Machon spent her honeymoon night in the
cottage, after being married in
Oving church in 1944. Her first married name was Murphy.
Oving
should be pronounced OWving and the meaning of the word has
something to do with a sheeps foot! Has anyone any more information on
this? Her Grandad worked as a shepherd
for Mr Harold Drewit of Drewits Farm. Another Aunt, Maud Dummer, lived
in the second cottage
after
Red Brick Cottage at Colworth. Mrs Machon was born at 1, the High
Street.
Webmaster would like to thank Mrs Machon for taking the trouble to get
in touch, and sharing her memories of Oving.
